South East Tour Guides Shore ExcursionSir Winston Churchill’s Chartwell.

Travel north from Dover through the county of Kent in a  chauffeured car to visit Chartwell, the house chosen by Churchill for he and Clementine to bring up their growing family.

Today the house is still much as it was when the family lived here – pictures, books and personal mementoes evoking the career and wide-ranging interests of this influential family providing an insight into the private life of the great man.

Churchill at ChartwellThe visit includes an exhibition in Churchill’s studio tucked away by the lawns of the house; the largest single collection of Churchill’s paintings.
Chartwell gunnera Surrounding the house are fabulous gardens, some designed by Sir Winston Churchill and the Golden Wedding anniversary garden given to the couple by their children.

See for yourself the spectacular views across the Kentish Weald, the view that Churchill said ‘seduced him’ into purchasing the house.

chartwell JockAnd look out for Chartwell’s current resident cat Jock VI, the Churchill family requested that there always be a marmalade cat named Jock at Chartwell in honour of Churchill’s original beloved cat.

Chruchill with Ramsey DynamoDepending on how long you wish to stay at Chartwell, there may be time to visit another site on our way back to your ship, for example to continue the Churchill theme at Dover Castle by visiting the Operation Dynamo exhibition deep within the wartime tunnels of the White Cliffs themselves.
